OM, far from the level of the Champions League, was punished by Manchester City 3-0.

  • Olympique de Marseille lost heavily on Tuesday night at the Stade Vélodrome against Manchester City 3-0.

  • The 3-5-2 chosen by André Villas Boas against Pep Guardiola worked rather well in defense, until the last quarter of an hour, but not at all in attack.

  • Qualifying for the round of 16 already seems impossible with zero points on the clock after two days.

At the Velodrome stadium,

Olympique de Marseille did not exist against Manchester City, losing 3-0 on Tuesday night for their return to the Stade Vélodrome, after a seven-year absence in the Champions League.

The Marseillais have been largely outclassed by the group's favorite and qualifying for the knockout stages already seems impossible.

The 3-5-2 at Villas Boas only half-worked (and still ...)

The Marseille coach warned at a press conference: an OM coach should never be inspired by Olympique Lyonnais.

However, he decided to move to 3-5-2, a system that had already caused problems for Manchester City.

On the defense side, the Marseillais have shown themselves to be quite solid.

They conceded few chances, even if City managed to open the scoring in the first half (more on this later).

And the English did not frame a strike after the break, until the goals of Gundogan (76th) and Sterling (80th).

On the other side of the field, OM have never existed offensively.

Supposed to proceed against, the Marseillais did not succeed, losing a lot of balls when it was necessary to start from behind.

They also played more towards Mandanda than anything else, and it is not Radonjic's shot on target just before the break or that of Thauvin pushed back to the post just after that will be enough to brighten up this record.

In the end, Manchester City obtained two situations in the first half and three in the second half.

Enough to sweep away a very weak OM team.

Straight to the point is our motto.

Too many individual errors on the side of OM

The system chosen by André Villas Boas was not necessarily a success, but it was above all the individual errors that made the Marseillais plunge.

As on this missed back pass from Rongier to Caleta-Car, which landed directly in the feet of De Bruyne, who only had to serve Torres for the first goal (18th).

Rongier has also multiplied the bad choices and the loss of balls.

Leo Balerdi almost gave City a second goal on a missed knee control (35th).

But it is all the Marseillais, overall, who lacked technical accuracy to worry Pep Guardiola's team.

An already struggling Champions League campaign

With this defeat at home, Olympique de Marseille have still not scored a single point this season in the Champions League.

Already non-existent in the second half during the defeat against Olympiakos last week (1-0), OM were overtaken throughout the game by an efficient City.

An eleventh defeat in a row in the Champions League which hurts when you know the pride that C1 can represent in Marseille.

Anderlecht's sad record could be tied next week.

In the group's other match, FC Porto won against Olympiakos (2-0).

Marseille is therefore the only team to still not have scored a single point in this group.

The objective today seems to be more not to relive the zero points of 2013/2014 than to hope for an improbable qualification.
