Direct Narration and classifications
The big names in this Giro were Geraint Thomas, Simon Yates, Vincenzo Nibali, Steven Kruijswijk, Jakob Fuglsang, Aleksandr Vlasov, Wilco Kelderman ... All of them were falling for one reason or another, either due to falls, or due to positive covid, well because the forces did not give them to fight for the final victory.
And so, the path to glory was cleared for two young boys who no one expected fighting for the final triumph.
Tao Geoghegan Hart and
Jay Hindley
arrived at the Milan time trial in equal time, an unheard of fact after 20 days of racing.
It was a heads-up, a 15.7-kilometer Giro, all or nothing, from which the Briton emerged victorious.
Geoghegan left as a favorite theorist and endorsed his condition on the road between Cernusco sul Naviglio and the Duomo of the capital of Lombardy, beating Hindley by 39 seconds, the man who rode his goat dressed in a 'pink jersey' that only lasted him 24 hours.
Without being the leader for a single day, the Ineos runner has reached the unexpected glory of the Impossible Giro, the one that had to be run in the autumn, the one who felt the threat of collapse due to the damn covid, the one who suffered a boycott of the runners , the one who had to reprogram his queen stage on the fly.
Getting to Milan soon became the Giro's sole objective and Geoghegan has done it before anyone else.
The 25-year-old Briton achieved the great victory of his life in a race in which he was called upon to support Thomas, the Ineos leader who had to leave the Giro after the third stage after tripping over a bottle and suffering a fall that produced a pelvic fracture.
Suddenly, Geoghegan saw himself as the emergency leader, but had to go in tow after losing two minutes to the best on the first mountain stage, which ended on Etna.
For two-thirds of the Giro, Geoghegan was simply a contender for the top 10 of the race.
Only after winning the Piancavallo stage, last Sunday, the Briton raised his arm to claim that he could aspire to the podium.
The Joao Almeida debacle at the Stelvio and
Wilco Kelderman
at Sestriere meant that, by natural selection, he and Hindley were left as the only contenders for the final victory.
In the time trial, won again with brutal solvency by
Filippo Ganna
, also from Ineos, Geoghegan simply gave Hindley no choice.
Fifth place for Pello Bilbao
Together with the winner, the mentioned Hindley and Wilco Kelderman take the podium.
Pello Bilbao
tried to keep fourth place overall, but
Joao Almeida
ended up snatching it from him and the Basque finished fifth this Giro, an excellent result for him.
Regarding the secondary classifications, the 'cyclamen jersey' of regularity has been for
Arnaud Démare
(Groupama-FDJ), winner of the four massive 'sprints' of this edition;
the 'azzurra jersey' of the mountain for
Rubén Guerreiro
(EF Pro Cycling), winner at Rocarasso;
the youth's 'maglia bianca' for Geoghegan himself;
and the team victory went to Ineos, which is leaving this Giro with victory in the general classification and seven sets: four by Ganna, two by the final winner and one by Narváez.
The Giro, in short, has been outstanding for the British group, which continues with the success burned into its identity.
Geoghegan is the fourth different rider to win a Grand Tour for
Sir Dave Brailsford's team
in the past three years, following Chris Froome (2018 Giro),
Geraint Thomas
(2018 Tour) and
Egan Bernal
(2019 Tour).
And he could still add one more, as
Richard Carapaz
is one of the main favorites to win the Tour of Spain, which still has two weeks left.
