Max Verstappen set the third fastest time on Saturday in the third and final practice for the Grand Prix of Portugal.

The Red Bull driver had to pass the Mercedes duo Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton.

Bottas set the fastest time of the weekend so far with 1.16.654.

His teammate Hamilton conceded only two hundredths, Verstappen followed after 0.15 seconds.

The Limburger drove his times on the medium tire, while both Mercedes drivers had the faster soft tires under their car.

The differences were relatively small, as the first nine drivers were within a second of each other.

In the two practices on Friday, Bottas also set the fastest lap time.

Verstappen then came to the third and second fastest time, although his second practice was ruined by a crash with Lance Stroll.

New F1 circuit: 'It will just be Verstappen against Mercedes again'

Training stopped in the final phase after loose manhole cover

In the last minute, practice ended because a manhole cover on the side of the circuit had come loose after Sebastian Vettel drove over it.

As a result, some parts of the Ferrari ended up on the track.

Until then, the training proceeded without major incidents.

Hamilton did lose control briefly and had to pay for it with a ride through the gravel pit, but the six-time world champion was able to continue on his way.

Qualifying on the Portimão circuit starts on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The race starts on Sunday at 2.10 p.m.
