A minute of silence, during the professional sports competitions next weekend, and the wearing of a black armband for the mid-week matches, were decided on Wednesday by the Ministry of Sports in tribute to Samuel Paty.

From this Wednesday, in Greece, the players of the Olympique de Marseille engaged in the Champions League against Olympiakos, will wear a black armband (at least the captain), as will the teams of "women's and men's basketball. , handball, football, rugby, volleyball and the men's ice hockey championship, which will play matches on weekdays, the ministry said in a statement.

“Ligue 1, the Top 14 and the international meeting between the French rugby team and Wales will also be marked by a minute of silence in memory of Samuel Paty,” the statement added.

Samuel Paty, 47, was beheaded on Friday near his college in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine (Yvelines) by an 18-year-old refugee of Chechen origin, after showing his students caricatures of Muhammad during a course on freedom of speech.

For its part, the Professional Football League (LFP) also announced that, "alongside the national tribute to Samuel Paty, French professional football will be united this weekend to pay tribute to Bruno Martini", the former goalkeeper of the France team, who died this week at 58 years old.
