Fernando Gaviria is cursed.

The Colombian sprinter of the UAE team has tested positive for the coronavirus for the second time this year on the second day of rest on the Giro.

The first time was on the UAE Tour at the end of February.

He then had to be placed in quarantine.

This time, his team says it is completely asymptomatic.

“Gaviria was immediately isolated after the test result.

He feels good, ”UAE Emirates said in a statement.

The Emirati training clarified that “all other runners and staff have returned a negative test and will undergo further testing today (Tuesday).

On Tuesday, the International Cycling Union (UCI) and the organizers of the Giro first reported a case of Covid-19 within the team, before UAE Emirates confirmed its identity in a statement separate.

Quiet day of rest than last week

The UCI and the organization have reported another positive test, in a member of the staff of the AG2R La Mondiale team.

A total of 492 tests were performed on the rest day, they said.

The two people positive for the coronavirus were entrusted to the team doctors "who ordered the isolation measures and took the appropriate measures, with regard to contact cases", according to the organizers of the Giro and the UCI.

The screening operation carried out on Monday gave results that were lower than the first day of rest: two runners, the Dutchman Steven Kruijswijk and the Australian Michael Matthews, as well as six team members were then detected positive.

The next day, the Jumbo-Visma (that of Kruijswijk) and Mitchelton-Scott (whose leader Simon Yates had withdrawn from the race for mild symptoms) announced their withdrawal from the event.
