Colombian cyclist

Fernando Gaviria

, from the UAE Team Emirates team, has been infected with coronavirus again, after testing positive for the first time in March in the Tour of the United Arab Emirates, and will leave the Giro d'Italia, as confirmed by his team.

"After undergoing a PCR test yesterday, on the rest day of the Giro d'Italia, Fernando Gaviria, from UAE Team Emirates, tested positive for COVID-19," his team revealed in a statement, so he will not be on Tuesday at the start of the sixteenth stage.

UAE Team Emirates also confirmed that all other riders and team personnel tested negative and will undergo further testing on Tuesday.

"The teams' medical staff are monitoring the situation closely and doing everything possible to ensure that we can proceed safely," he said.

Gaviria was isolated "immediately" after the test result and feels "fine" and is "completely asymptomatic".

This is the second time that the Colombian has tested positive for coronavirus, after also suffering it in March, when he was forced to leave the Tour of the United Arab Emirates.

Thus, the Colombian is one of the two positives that have appeared in the 492 tests carried out by the organization between Sunday and Monday.

The other infected is "a staff member of the AG2R-La Mondiale team", who is also in isolation.
