Mathieu van der Poel won the Tour of Flanders, his first Monument on Sunday, ahead of his eternal rival Wout van Aert.

The duo escaped with world champion Julian Alaphilippe.

But the French crashed heavily, hitting an organization motorcycle.

The finish line was a sprint for victory, won by Mathieu van der Poel, 24 years after his father Adrie.

Julian Alaphilippe suffers from two fractures to his right wrist.

"Julian Alaphilippe crashed into a motorcycle and had to give up the race. The world champion was transported to the Ronse hospital, where x-rays showed fractures of the pasterns 2 and 4 of his right hand," says his team Deceuninck in a statement, adding that he "will be operated on Monday at the Herentals hospital".
