Liverpool defender Van Dyck will undergo knee surgery

Premier League champions Liverpool have said defender Virgil Van Dyck suffered a knee ligament injury and will undergo surgery after being injured during the Merseyside summit against Everton on Saturday.

The Dutch defender was knocked out early after a reckless intervention by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford inside the penalty area, amid widespread anger at Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp.

"Livriol confirms that Virgil Van Dyck will undergo knee surgery after the injury he suffered during the 2-2 draw with Everton," Liverpool said in a statement.

"The defender injured his knee ligaments in the incident that saw Jordan Pickford intervene after six minutes at Goodison Park."

The club did not say how long the 29-year-old defender will be absent.
