Interview.Belasteguín and Galán, two generations of a sport without restraint: "In my house it is not known if I play paddle tennis or am an office worker"
While preparing her debut at the Barcelona Master -resolved 6-0 and 6-1 with her partner, Marta Ortega-, Bea González reviews her notes from the second year of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences.
And between one thing and the other, pick up the phone to answer the call from this newspaper.
On the other side is an 18-year-old girl, although she doesn't seem like it at all, because she speaks with the maturity and poise of a veteran.
It may be because, in a way, it is a bit, after
having debuted
at the
age of 14
on the professional circuit, then lighting up the promise of a star in the making.
It turned out that that promise was true, as confirmed a few weeks ago in Madrid, when she became the youngest player to win a World Padel Tour tournament.
"On the track there is no age, we are all the same, it does not matter 18 or 40. In the end, the rivals play to win the same and what makes the difference is having enough maturity to overcome the downturns", explains this Malaga who since For a year he has lived at the StarVie High Performance Center in Madrid.
Your path to success has not been easy, by no means is it.
That said, she made her debut on the professional circuit as a 14-year-old "girl" and on the way to 18 she has also gone through difficult times.
«At first I suffered a lot.
Sometimes I would do a thousand kilometers to play a tournament, I would lose 6-0 and 6-1 in an hour and return another thousand kilometers to home.
You have to experience things like this to know what they are like and to know how to deal with moments of weakness and downturn.
It is part of the journey, ”he says.
A music lover, he plays the guitar - he has two - and during confinement he encouraged himself with the flamenco box - "I'm quite cool" -, although the learning remained in the "attempt".
After the forced confinement, he had to return to the tracks with his new partner,
Marta Ortega
, dominator of the World Padel Tour last year.
And from there to success: he fell in the quarterfinals in the first tournament and in the second he achieved his first victory.
The next great challenge suggested by his precociousness is to snatch the title of world's number one youngest ever from his partner.
For that, he is still four years old.
"Hopefully so," he admits modestly.
His talent is also recognized outside the circuit.
He recently made a couple with
Raúl González
- "he surprised me, he's good at it and he's a very nice and pleasant person" - and
Carles Puyol
has encouraged him to play with him, now that he's in Barcelona.
Although the first thing, of course, is to fight for the second title of his still short career this week.
