Thousands of supporters had gathered around the Lakers' regular home arena Staples Center to follow what became the final game of the year.

After the final signal, the big celebration began, which soon turned into several people throwing bottles and stones at the police.

According to the police, a number of people then started trying to smash windows on surrounding houses.

A café is said to have been looted and over 30 properties are said to have been damaged.

"What began as a largely calm celebration of the Lakers' NBA title in downtown Los Angeles turned into aggressive, violent and destructive behavior," the city police wrote in a statement.

Blames the police

Supporters tell the Los Angeles Times that it only derailed when the police began to intervene against them, and the newspaper states that the celebration went smoothly elsewhere.

- This (Lakers victory) has given us a chance to breathe a sigh of relief and a small glimpse of normal life, says supporter Joanna Cotton to the newspaper.

Authorities had urged the public not to go to the central parts of Los Angeles, citing corona restrictions.

The Lakers defeated the Miami Heat 106-93 in final game six and took the club's 17th overall title in the North American Basketball League.

The final, like the entire playoffs, was decided in a corona-proof bubble in Orlando, Florida.
