, current Formula 1 world champion, confirmed the positive for coronavirus of one of its team members on Thursday, a day before the Eifel Grand Prix begins, which will be held at the German Nurburgring circuit.
"We can confirm that a team member tested positive for COVID-19. This has been and is being managed in accordance with the protocols of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), working closely with the FIA," Mercedes said in a short statement.
The German team
did not reveal the identity of the person affected, but it did confirm that its drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas are not infected
.
Mercedes insisted that it remains "working together with the governing body FIA."
The F1 season takes place amid strict safety and hygiene regulations, as well as mandatory tests prior to each Grand Prix among all members of the 'great circus'.
