He will have left his first name to a famous soup at the Meinau stadium.

Egon Gindorf, former president of RC Strasbourg (2003-2005) and a figure particularly appreciated by supporters, has died at the age of 89.

"All our thoughts are with his family, his loved ones and all the Racing supporters who are losing today an emblematic and historic figure of the club," the Alsatian club said in a statement.

This brilliant successful entrepreneur, born in Germany and who divided his life between Strasbourg and Monaco, took over the club in May 2003 after the disastrous McCormack episode.

Under his presidency, Racing won the Coupe de la Ligue in 2005.

Matches shared with the ultras

Mr. Gindorf had quickly seduced the public of La Meinau by going regularly to watch the matches in the stands with the ultras, or by sharing with the supporters a bowl of broken pea soup near the stadium on very cold evenings.

He left the presidency of Racing in December 2005 for personal reasons, marking the beginning of a slow descent into hell and several years of instability for the Alsatian club.
