Edwin van der Sar is one of ten goalkeepers who have a chance of a place in the best team of all time.

The French magazine

France Football is

organizing this election as an alternative to the canceled Golden Ball election.

The now 49-year-old Van der Sar played in his career for Ajax, Juventus, Fulham and Manchester United and achieved great success, especially with the team from Amsterdam and 'The Red Devils'.

The 130-time international won with Ajax and United, among other things, four national titles, the Champions League and the world cup for clubs.

In addition to Van der Sar, Gordon Banks, Thomas N'Kono, Peter Schmeichel, Sepp Maier, Lev Yashin, Dino Zoff, Iker Casillas, Gianluigi Buffon and Manuel Neuer are among the nominees.

Neuer and Buffon are the only keepers who are still active.

Banks and Yashin passed away in 2019 and 1990 respectively.

The nominated defenders will follow later on Monday, in a week the nominations will be announced to the midfielders and in two weeks it will be known which attackers can hope for a place in the best team of all time.

, but the winners are ultimately chosen by a total of 170 journalists.

The best team of all time will be revealed in December.

normally always awards the Golden Ball for the best player of the year.

However, the French magazine announced at the end of July that it would not organize the election this year, because the corona crisis could not give a representative picture of the best football players of 2020.
