The round of 16 against Chinese Shuai Zhang was not so thrilling in itself.

Petra Kvitova won the match in convincing style with 2-0 in sets, 6-2, 6-4, and the quarter-final place was never particularly threatened.

But for the 30-year-old Czech, there was still a lot of emotion in the picture.

- I got a little emotional before the last two balls in the match, says Kvitova.

Knife attack in the home

The reason is that it was in the French championships that she made her long-awaited comeback in 2017. Then she had been away from the track for six months after being attacked with a knife in her home at the end of 2016, which resulted in a severely injured left hand in addition to the the traumatic experience.

When she went to a decision in the match against Shuai Zhang, the memories came back, says Kvitova, who could never have believed that she would reach a quarter-final in Paris again.

Her best result in the French Championships is a semi-final place in 2012.

- Everything suddenly came back.

When I talk about it now, I get emotional again.

It has really been a long journey.

I started thinking about how my whole family and people I love helped me through a very tough time, says Petra Kvitova.

Four seeded left

Kvitova will next face unseeded German Laura Siegemund.

Only four seeded players remain on the women's side apart from seventh seeded Kvitova: Eliva Svitolina (seeded 3rd), Sofia Kenin (4th) and Ons Jabeur (30th).
