Coach Achim Beierlorzer was fired after the club's two initial losses and was replaced by assistant Jan-Moritz Lichte.

But it did not go better for that.

Lichte got off to a tough start in his new role when the away match with Union Berlin ended with the club's third loss, 0-4.

Max Kruse gave the home team the lead already in the 13th minute and four minutes into the second half, the Danish striker Marcus Ingvartsen increased to 2-0.

3-0 was nodded in by Marvin Friedrich and 4-0 put the Finn Joel Pohjanpalo.

Mainz has thus started the season with the result line: 1-3 Leipzig, 1-4 Stuttgart and 0-4 Union Berlin.

Robin Quaison, recently selected in the Swedish national team, started for Mainz and was replaced in the 71st minute.
