The Japanese manufacturer of vehicles Honda Motor announced this Friday that it will end its participation in the Formula 1 World Championship in 2021, with the aim of focusing its resources on developing new generation technologies.
The Japanese company, currently responsible for the engines of the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing and Alpha Tauri teams, has participated as a constructor in the World Championship since 2015 and will stop doing so at the end of next season, it said in a statement.
"In 2015 we started this challenge with the goal of winning the best four-wheel race in the world with our own technology," Honda said.
The company "has achieved high competitiveness" and its vehicles have been victorious in 3 races in 2019 and another two this year, he noted.
Honda Motor has now decided to "focus its management and its resources on research and development for the future", and in particular on fuel cell vehicles and battery electric cars.
All of this is part of the company's strategy to achieve "carbon neutrality by 2050" and "to contribute to a sustainable society" and is part of the "decisive moment" facing the global motor industry.
Honda, however, "will continue to face the challenge of competing" in the Formula 2 World Championship until the end of the 2021 season.
"To meet the expectations of our fans, we will fight with all our strength until the end of next season and with the goal of achieving more triumphs with Red Bull Racing and Alpha Tauri," said the Japanese company.
