A Lion replaces another Lion in the cages of Stade Rennais.

The Breton club formalized Tuesday evening the arrival of Senegalese goalkeeper from Dijon Alfred Gomis, 27, who has signed up for five years.

He will replace his compatriot in the selection Edouard Mendy, who left for Chelsea and started for the first time Tuesday evening against Tottenham.

"We talked a bit with Édou," Alfred Gomis said in a club press release.

He's a really good guy.

He told me that there was a great locker room, that we worked hard during the week and that we had a lot of fun on the weekends ”.

According to several media, Dijon would have obtained between 15 and 16 million euros for its goalkeeper, while Rennes had let Mendy go to England for 22 million pounds (24 million euros), the highest amount of the story for a goalie from L1.

Gomis launched his career in Italy

Born in Ziguinchor, Alfred Gomis arrived in Italy with his family at the age of 3 and trained at Torino FC.

He started his career in Serie B and then discovered Serie A in 2017 with SPAL, from where Dijon had brought him in 2019 for one million euros.

His transfer is therefore an excellent financial deal for the Burgundy club but a sporting blow for the red lantern of Ligue 1 less than a week before the end of the transfer window.

A few weeks ago, Gomis had also extended his contract in Burgundy until 2024, before being asked by Rennes following expressions of interest from Chelsea for Mendy.

The two goalkeepers have a relatively similar profile, in terms of morphology and behavior on and off the pitch, which could allow Gomis to adapt quickly, like his former Dijon teammate Nayef Aguerd.
