Controversial handball points Newcastle to tie against Tottenham

Newcastle United took advantage of a controversial new handball in stoppage time, as Callum Wilson scored from the penalty spot to tie Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 in the Premier League on Sunday.

Tottenham advanced with a goal by Lucas Moura in the 25th minute, and Newcastle did not hit any ball on goal until stoppage time for the second half, as Andy Carroll lifted a high ball against Eric Dyer and the striker touched the ball with his head to hit Tottenham's defender.

Referee Peter Banks resorted to following the shot via the video assistant referee's screen and indicated that a penalty kick had been awarded, amid protests by Tottenham's players.

Wilson successfully executed the penalty kick to clinch Steve Bruce's side a tie that seemed unlikely for most of the match.

A similar influential incident occurred in Manchester United's victory over Brighton, as well as in Everton's victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.
