Riders who throw waste outside the planned areas will incur time penalties, probably as early as next season, announced on Saturday the president of the International Cycling Union (UCI), David Lappartient.

“Throwing in the middle of nature is totally unacceptable,” declared the UCI president, who places environmental behavior among the three main risks facing cycling, along with doping and safety.

"We realize that fines and prevention have a relative effect on some," lamented David Lappartient during a press briefing organized on the occasion of the Worlds in Imola (Italy).

“I would like us to put in place much more coercive measures.

We cannot stay in the current situation ”.

February 2021 horizon

“A lot of efforts have been made but this is not the case for everyone”, he added, citing the example of the last Vuelta: “I was following the race with the Prime Minister of Andorra.

A runner emptied everything he had in his pockets in front of us and the Prime Minister was surprised: "But it's not forbidden?"

"

The UCI president, who insists that races can continue to be authorized on public roads, referred to individual time penalties, "perhaps collective for the team".

The point will be discussed during the next UCI management committee, scheduled for the end of January on the occasion of the cyclo-cross Worlds.

With the horizon of February 2021 for the entry date of the new regulations.

On the sensitive point of the safety of runners, made crucial by the many falls that have occurred since the resumption of competitions, David Lappartient confirmed the holding of a meeting of all stakeholders, in October in Brussels.

Two active riders, the Belgian Philippe Gilbert and the Italian Matteo Trentin, were asked in addition to representatives of the different associations of each cycling family (organizers, teams, riders).
