Report. "Being a leader makes me laugh" or why no one dominates the MotoGP World Championship
At 41,
Valentino Rossi
no longer asks for so much.
Some time ago, he demanded victories and a candidacy for the World Championship to continue racing in MotoGP, but now he just wants fun.
"Go fast, make podiums and fight to be among the top five in the championship", are his requests to Yamaha and thus he could compete until 60.
In recent days, as it always happens when he is going to sign a renewal, it was rumored that he would finally reveal the date of his retirement, which is already preparing to be team manager for 2022, that his students -
Morbidelli, Bagnaia, Marini, Bezzecchi
...- they are anxiously waiting for him to become boss, but finally he denied everything.
This Saturday he made official that he will continue to run next year, he warned that if everything goes well he will also do so the next and signed the new contract with his best Saturday of the season.
For the first time, he was placed in the front row of the grid only behind Morbidelli and Quartararo himself;
a success that eluded him in Montmeló since 2009.
Despite the fact that this season he has only been on the podium once and that his Yamaha has suffered several breakdowns, the seven-time MotoGP champion looks happy to be still there among his teenage friends.
After 'retiring' the last great Italian generation, with
Max Biaggi
or
Loris Capirossi
and losing his friend
Marco Simoncelli
, he now enjoys sponsoring future title contenders such as Morbidelli and Bagnaia.
And so on, until he gets tired.
"Last year I was very frustrated. After Le Mans I lost my way and suffered a lot in Mugello, in Assen, in Sachsenring, in Aragon, in Valencia ... I said to myself: 'If this continues, better not continue'. But Now the team is working well and I can go fast. These results are what keep me going for another year, "explained Rossi, who had been struggling with Yamaha for weeks to build the new stage to his liking.
The Italian will no longer remain in the official team, in which
Viñales
and Quartararo
will remain
and, although he will have the same equipment as them, he has had to make other resignations.
At Petronas Yamaha he will be accompanied by
David Muñoz
as technical director or
Matteo Flamigni
as telemetrician, but they will not be trusted mechanics like
Alex Briggs
and
Brent Stephens
.
A resignation that has saddened him, but that he has had no choice but to accept.
After all, at 41, Rossi no longer asks for so much.
