- It is a real challenge for pole vaulters and it is sometimes almost scary to know that I have to be better than all my predecessors to even have a chance in the competition, says Sam Kendricks at a press conference in Doha.
After the record jump, 6.15, in Rome last week, Armand Duplantis has jumped the highest of all both indoors and outdoors.
American Kendricks has a season best this year at 6.02 and the 28-year-old is third in the world outdoors through the ages with 6.06 from a competition in the USA 2019.
Kendricks, who has been with the world elite for a long time, praises the development in the sport - both materially and the fact that the breadth today is so great.
- You can not stop the youth from getting better in this sport.
But when you say things like that we want to outshine former greats… They paved the way for us and they set the bar high.
