Tonight, Armand Duplantis ended his 2020 competition season by winning Doha's Diamond League competition.

It was the end of a season that surpasses most that the athletics world has seen before.

There have been world record attempts in every other competition, and no less than three times he has done things that no one else has done before in the pole vault world.

But we take it from the beginning, and the beginning was for Duplanti's part this year in Düsseldorf, Germany on February 4.

6 meters already in the season debut

In his season debut, he managed 6 meters (Swedish indoor record) and world year best.

He then demanded the bar at the world record height of 6.17 - and was extremely close.

But no disappointment over the missed record was noticed in the interview with the International Athletics Federation afterwards.

- You get sentimental.

Almost so that I got some tears in my eyes.

You stand there and think, well, now that's the world record.

Since I was four years old, in my whole life in principle, I have wanted to be a world record holder.

I did not make it, but just trying was cool, he said.

World record - twice

It got cooler in the next competition.

Because then, four days later in Torun, Poland, he managed 6.17 in the second attempt.

The ecstasy was total and the only 20-year-old Swede beamed with joy when he met SVT Sport after the race.

- I have wanted this since I was three years old, I wanted this moment.

You do not know how the moment will feel when it happens, it is such a surreal crazy moment, I just float around in the air.

I'm in seventh heaven, there are no words, he said.

Duplantis after the world record: "Have dreamed of it all my life"

One might think that it is difficult to recharge after setting a new world record.

But not for Duplantis.

Just a week later, in Glasgow, Scotland, it was time again.

Duplantis then jumped 6.18 and thus polished the world record by one centimeter.

- I do not know what to say, it's crazy.

It is difficult to explain what happens, I just jump well, Armand Duplantis told SVT Sport after the competition.

Tried at 6.19

After Duplanti's two straight world records, expectations were almost enormous when he would jump in a competition in Lievin, France, four days later.

And 6.07 - a height that has been unattainable for almost everyone in history - went playfully easy.

Here, Duplantis takes 6.07 as easily as possible

But there was no new world record.

A disappointed hiss went through the spectator trail when he missed his three attempts at 6.19 in a hall that entirely the hall breathed Duplantis.

The indoor season then ended in the pole vault gala in the former world record holder Renaud Lavillenie's hometown of Clermont-Ferrand.

He won again (6.01) and then sent up the bar again at 6.19.

There were three good attempts, but nothing ended with the crossbar left.

- It was a good attempt and it feels like I have the height in me.

It was a good try, but not perfect.

It was small details that were missing.

But I am satisfied and it has been a good way to start a season by setting two world records, says Armand Duplantis to SVT Sport after the competition.

The corona pandemic put a stop to it

With the competition in France, the indoor season was over, and now months awaited that the world had never seen before.

The corona pandemic took off, and the world was shut down.

Armand Duplantis got to enjoy training at home in the garden in Louisiana.

It ended in a draw between Lavillenie and Duplantis, who jumped 26 jumps each.

Outdoor premiere in Oslo

Since Sweden during the corona spring and summer was much less closed than other countries, Duplantis went to Sweden earlier than planned to train, and was already on Swedish soil at the beginning of June.

The first competition of the summer was "Impossible Games" at Bislett in Oslo on June 11, where it - like all other times this year - was a victory.

5.86 was the victory height, in a special competition where Renaud Lavillenie competed at home on his plot in France.

After that, two more competitions awaited where Duplantis won at heights of six meters, before it was time for his first Diamond League competition of the season on 14 August, and then came his first six-meter competition outdoors in 2020.

Armand Duplantis cleared six meters for the first time during this year's outdoor season Photo: Bildbyrån

- Getting over six meters was something I invested in before the competition.

I wanted to show myself and everyone else that I was in six-meter form, he told SVT Sport.

He then claimed the bar at 6.15, which had been the world's highest jump ever outdoors.

But there were two interrupted attempts before the Swede tore with his narrow legs and was never really close to getting over.

Darkness stopped in Lausanne

Nor in the subsequent competitions did he take 6.15.

On September 2, in Lausanne, he looked really good.

But then he was stopped by the darkness.

- It's as it is.

I'm happy with what we did before dark.

I started to get a little tired anyway.

I can not complain too much about it, Duplantis said afterwards.

Two days later he was not stopped by the darkness.

After finishing six meters in Brussels, he demanded the bar at 6.15, and was not too far from finishing.

Armand Duplantis tried for the world record outdoors in Brussels.

- I tried the outdoor record, the first was quite promising, but it was headwind and my legs felt tough, he said.

The world's highest hope ever outdoors

But two races later, the legs were not tough.

At the Golden Gala Pietrea Mennea (also known as Rome's Diamond League) it was finally time.

After a good first attempt, the second attempt then went the way.

- I really wanted to take over the record from Bubka.

It's hard to explain, really.

But I knew I had it in me, I just needed to get all the pieces in place, and today I got it, Duplantis told SVT Sport.

The tributes were of course many from various big names, including SVT Sports expert Kajsa Bergqvist.

- It's like he's run around everyone in the world elite with horse lengths.

He is in a completely different division.

Just over a week later, on September 25 in Doha, it was time to end the season.

And again this time it was a victory, but "only" 6.82 as a victory result.

But the tributes were still great.

- He has had an incomparable season, said SVT Sports expert Alhaji Jeng.
