• Engine: Assault on Tesla's throne

California, a champion of the fight against climate change for years, has taken a historic step to further strengthen its position.

Gavin Newsom, the governor of the nation's most populous state, confirmed that they will ban the sale of cars and pickups with combustion engines starting in 2035, a drastic measure with which he hopes to meet the objectives set for

reducing greenhouse gases in 35% in 15 years.

California thus becomes the first state to adopt the measure in full check of the Administration of President Trump to the fight against global warming.

The executive order will mean an "aggressive move away from the state's dependence on fossil fuels" and a

source of job creation,

according to the released statement.

The transportation sector is responsible for more than half of the state's carbon pollution and 80% of the

smog

that forms daily in regions such as Los Angeles and the Central Valley of California.

"This is

the most impactful step

we could take to combat climate change," Newsom said.

"For too many decades, we've allowed cars to pollute the air our children and families breathe. Californians shouldn't have to worry that our cars are giving our kids asthma. Our cars shouldn't make wildfires worse and create more. Smoky air-filled days. Cars shouldn't melt glaciers or raise sea levels, threatening our precious beaches and coasts. "

The limitations will also affect medium and heavy duty trucks.

They should be zero-emission vehicles by 2045. Of course.

The executive order clarifies that it

will be legal to continue circulating with gasoline cars in 2035 and sell them in the used vehicle market,

a transition in which state authorities will have the obligation to collaborate with the private sector to accelerate the installation of charging stations and make it easy for all Californians to have access to electric vehicles at affordable prices.

They calculate that by then

the value of electric cars will have equaled that of traditional cars

and will be considerably better.

That is precisely what Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, spoke about yesterday at the presentation of Battery day, an annual event that the California-based company dedicates to batteries.

The South African promised electric models for $ 25,000 - about 21,400 euros - within three years.

His company, the undisputed leader in the electricity market worldwide, is one of the great beneficiaries of Newsom's measure.

The rest will have to put the batteries to serve one of the largest markets worldwide,

the State with the most cars in the entire country,

with 15.1 million registered in 2018, almost double that of the second, Texas with 8.2 million .

In 2020 alone, even with the pandemic, 1.63 million cars and trucks are expected to be sold in California.

Newsom's announcement comes at the height of the wildfire season, attributed by the scientific community and by the Democratic Party to global warming.

The clash with Trump has been frontal in this regard after the attacks by the president, convinced that poor forest management is

the main cause of the 26 deaths

and the 14,500 square kilometers burned by fires since mid-August.

Newsom, on the other hand, is convinced of the impact of humans on climate change, and is taking action on the matter.
