• NASCAR: FBI Confirms Gallows Knot Rope From Bubba Wallace's Garage Has Been There Since 2019

Michael Jordan

will have a double job.

The former

Chicago Bulls

and

Washington Wizards player

, currently the owner of

the

NBA's

Charlotte Hornets

, has announced the creation of a new team that will compete in

NASCAR

, one of the great automobile competitions in the United States.

Joining him, at the helm of the team, will be pilot

Denny Hamlin

, and they will give a seat on the grid to

Bubba Wallace

, the only African-American driver in the competition.

"Historically,

NASCAR hasn't had a lot of diversity or black owners

. The times seem perfect, with NASCAR increasingly supporting societal change," Jordan explained in a statement.

The '23' becomes the

first black owner since Wendell Scott

, who drove his own race car between 1961 and 1973 and was the only African American to win a race.

Jordan, who this year

donated more than $ 100 million to initiatives to combat racism

, says this is "an opportunity to educate a new audience and create more opportunities for African Americans in the world of racing."

"Jordan and Bubbca can be tremendously powerful voices together, not only in our sport, but beyond it as well," said Hamlin.

"Deciding the driver was easy. It had to be Bubba Wallace."

Wallace is the only African-American on the grid and at 27 years old, despite not winning any of the 105 races he has contested, he has achieved

several top-10s

and has been the voice of demands for racial equality in NASCAR.

"He deserves the opportunity to compete to win races."

NASCAR has welcomed Jordan saying he will help "the growth of our sport", and the former player has stated that as a child he was a fan of the competition.

"Growing up in North Carolina,

my parents took us to racing. And I've been a NASCAR fan my entire life

. Having the opportunity to lead my own team with Bubba Wallace as a driver is very exciting for me."

The rope in Wallace's box

At the end of last June,

Bubba Wallace

took all the prominence of NASCAR after the organization found

a rope in his box on the Talladega Superspeedway circuit

(Alabama).

Wallace had endorsed the 'Black Lives Matter' movement and called the incident a "despicable act

of racism and hatred

."

"This serves as a painful reminder that we have to fight as a society and be persistent in the fight against racism," added the pilot from Mobile (Alabama).

Wallace had also been in favor of banning the Confederate flag at NASCAR events following protests against racism.

A few days later,

the FBI confirmed that the rope had been in that box since fall 2019

and closed its investigation by stressing that no crime had been committed, that the rope was already there and that "no one could have known that Mr. Wallace had been I would assign garage number 4 last week. "
