Shcherbakova's quadruple jump

A week earlier, Anna Shcherbakova made the fans nervous, having fallen from the branded quadruple lutz at test skates.

The fact that the athlete did not succeed in such an important element for her made one wonder if he had completely disappeared from her arsenal during the quarantine.

The first stage of the Russian Cup gave the national champion one more opportunity to show that she can perform jumps in four turns.

But first, Shcherbakova had to show her short program and win it, which in the absence of Evgenia Medvedeva should not have been difficult.

To the new lyrical music, she cleanly performed the axel, flip and the lutz-rittberger cascade, although in the last jump there was an under-rotation, from which the athlete herself winced when she looked again.

The judges even awarded Shcherbakova with two bonus points for perfect spins.

Therefore, the final result exceeded all expectations - student Eteri Tutberids scored 82.13 points.

Last season, only Alena Kostornaya performed better with a triple axel.

Before the free program, it became known that Shcherbakova changed the lutz to a flip, but it did not work out in the warm-up either - the skater fell in training, trying to perform a jump.

But during the rental itself, everything worked out.

All judges, except one, rated the quad flip positively, and one referee did not regret even five points.

It was not possible to do without blots at all, the most serious mistake of Shcherbakova was the spade on the final cascade.

But some flaws could be attributed to the lack of endurance and competitive rhythm.

Student Tutberidze scored 246.40 points, leaving more ground for new quadruple jumps in the future.

Junior women fight for medals

Shcherbakova with her quadruple flip fought in essence with herself.

But other girls had to try to win the remaining two medals and points assigned to them for selection for the Russian championship.

At the end of the first day, a dispute broke out between Maya Khromykh and Anna Frolova.

The two juniors were separated by a little more than a point.

Khromykh jumped off the double axel with which she opened her program, but otherwise the participant of the junior world championship showed herself from the best side and scored 69.28 points.

Frolova's mistakes were not so critical, but the unclear edge on the lutz and the lack of camel in the rotation led to big losses, and the judges gave her 68.19 points.

In the free program, Khromykh had to consolidate the advantage - it was time for her to perform the quadruple salchow for the first time, which was already obtained in training.

But during the jump, the 14-year-old figure skater was led away, she could not complete all the turns and fell, having received fewer points than for the simplest rotation.

Failure knocked the mood off the student Tutberidze, and the whole program turned out to be crumpled, with errors on other jumps and another fall.

Khromykh even lost her triple flip, since due to the greased salchow he became the third repeated element.

Frolova did not allow any serious flaws.

Even if she had obscure edges on both lutz, fairly simple jumps and generally not very strong content, but there were no falls and uncounted elements.

The CSKA pupil skated for the 206.01 points she was entitled to, and this was more than enough to take second place.

Lame was content with bronze.

The first success of "Academy Plushenko"

In men's single skating, in the absence of Alexander Samarin, a fight was expected between Makar Ignatov, who flashed last season, and the recent vice-world champion among juniors, Roman Savosin.

Both looked quite decent at the test skates and claimed victory.

However, at the end of the first day, the leadership was unexpectedly seized by 17-year-old Artyom Kovalev, a graduate of the Academy of Angels Plushenko.

Unlike competitors, he already had a competitive practice this season and managed to win the Moscow Open Championship.

In Syzran, the junior almost finished the quadruple salchow and cleanly performed the triple axel, gaining 84.87 points in the end.

Although Ignatov showed a clean quadruple rittberger, but landed unsuccessfully on a quad sheepskin coat in a cascade and flunked a triple axel, becoming the second with a score of 81.82 points.

For Savosin, not a single jumping element went into plus.

In the free program, Kovalev did not show himself so well.

In his performance to Queen's music, he fell on one quadruple salchow and did a butterfly on the second.

It was also not possible to cope with the triple axel, and even in one of the rotations there was a decrease.

The final result of 229.39 points was unlikely to have been victorious, but the rivals were doing even worse.

Ignatov fell on both a quadruple flip and a quadruple sheepskin coat, after which there should have been a cascade.

In the second half of the program, the triple lutz did not work out, so the third place was still a good result for him.

Savosin was able to land on all three quadruple jumps, but the judges recorded under-rotation on each, and the recent junior did not succeed in triple axel at all.

Kovalev brought the Plushenko Academy the first notable victory in men's skating, although he himself was far from ideal.

Successful debut of the new duo

The first stage of the Russian Cup opened a new promising dance couple that will be able to compete for a place in the national team.

The victory in the competition was won by Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva and Yegor Bazin, for whom this was the first joint tournament.

At the same time, they only bypassed Annabel Morozov and Andrey Bagin who skated much longer together by a point.

In the spring, the bronze medalist of the Russian championship Bazin was left without a partner - due to back problems, Sofya Evdokimova had to end her career.

She was quickly replaced by Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva, the 2019 vice-world champion among juniors, for whom performing with an experienced partner is a chance to immediately declare herself in adult skating.

Already in the rhythm dance, Khudaiberdieva and Bazin pleasantly surprised the judges, gaining 78.19 points.

At the last Russian championship, such a result would have allowed them to enter the top three.

In the free dance, the couple also performed as if they had been skating together for several years.

They did not get the maximum levels in only two tracks of steps, there were no complaints about the rest of the elements.

True, for the program itself, Khudaiberdieva and Bazin received fewer points than Morozov and Bagin, but in terms of the sum of two rentals, the duet from the Moscow and Samara regions became the best.
