The 73-year-old Zoetemelk suffered several fractures in the accident.

His family has announced that the former rider is conscious.

Zoetemelk was in Paris because he would be present at the last stage of the Tour de France.

The 107th edition of the cycling round ends on Sunday with the traditional stage on the Champs-Élysées.

Zoetemelk, who has lived in France for years, won the Tour de France in 1980. With Jan Janssen (1968), he is the only Dutchman who managed to win the most important cycling race in the world.
