On May 26, 1984, Sergei Bubka jumped 5.85 in Bratislava, becoming the world record holder in pole vault.

After that, apart from a few minutes during a race in Rome (when Thierry Vigneron jumped 5.91, but a few minutes later was knocked down by Bubka's 5.94), he has been the pole vaulter who jumped the highest in the world outdoors.

"Fantastic result!"

Until tonight, when Armand Duplantis jumped 6.15 in Rome.

But 56-year-old Bubka is not bitter.

Congratulations Armand Duplantis for breaking my record!

Fantastic result!

I'm happy for him and his parents.

They are super good people.

And I'm glad for athletics, and the sports world in general, that we have such a shining star in the years to come.

Good luck in the future, in your search for new heights ", Bubka writes on Twitter.
