Today, Frölunda Indians announced that they are changing the logo for the 2021/2022 season and thus removing the Indian.

In 2015, the club was reported to the Discrimination Ombudsman when the logo and name were considered offensive.

Joel Lundqvist, team captain and icon, reasons about the decision when SVT Sport reaches him by phone.

- It was well expected that the decision would be made with the debate that has taken place.

You want to be proud to represent the club, so you are behind the decision and the debate has been about a brand that sends the wrong signals, which is not fun, he says and continues:

- At the same time, I have represented Frölunda Indians for a long time and they have associated "Indians" with something else - a positive warrior - and been proud of it.

Now the wind has, for the most part, turned and you get a different view of the whole thing.

"Not thought of in those paths"

When asked if they may not have reflected on whether the logo is discriminatory, Lundqvist answers:

- Absolutely.

It is as if you have not thought in those paths.

This has taken away from the debate that has taken place in the United States and so on.

In a fairly short time, it has turned around to something else.

If you had made the decision - would you have kept or changed the logo?

- As I said, you want to be proud to represent the club both in Sweden and internationally.

It will be a final year with the Indian and you have to make sure to make a good finish.

How do you think the supporters react to the decision?

- It may be a bit divided.

You have to have respect for the fact that people have different opinions and views on things.

For us, it is about playing for the city of Frölunda and the club Frölunda.

Comments on "Henke"

Joel's twin brother Henrik Lundqvist is rumored to be leaving the New York Rangers, where he has one year left on his contract.

According to teammate Libor Hajek, "Henke" walked around the locker room after the loss to the Hurricanes in August and declared that the match is his last.

- What happens in the locker room stays in the locker room ... No, but I have nothing to comment on what he has said there and then.

I can not say anything more about it, says Joel to SVT Sport.

Frölunda next, maybe ...?

- No I do not think so.

He has a year left over there in the NHL and then we'll see what happens.

There has been talk of one or the other, but it will be clear here in a few weeks.

There is nothing I can confirm.

It must stand for him.
