When the SHL starts, it is usually uncertain what the outcome will be.

This season, it is not just sporting that there is uncertainty - but above all financially.

On Saturday, the premiere will be played in front of empty stands and how it will be during the rest of the season is unclear.

According to Michael Marchal, outgoing CEO of SHL, audience revenue accounts for between 30 and 40 percent of the clubs' total revenue, which you can now be forced to do without.

- It is a situation that makes it difficult for any business to cope with such a large loss without adding anything else.

This is going to be an exceptional season.

At the same time as we are going to fight for a Swedish Championship gold, it is important to survive, he says to SVT Sport.

Liquidity problems

The first to learn affected clubs financially are liquidity problems.

That is, money that can be used immediately to pay bills and other expenses.

And according to Michael Marchal, the audience revenue is extra important to be able to plan.

- The audience income means that you can plan your liquidity because the clubs know in good time when they will play their home matches.

They are very important for all clubs, he says.

"Not the league's task"

In the SVT Sport survey, most of the clubs answered that they saved on the player squad.

Michael Marchal also thinks that the clubs have acted wisely in this difficult situation.

- Since the clubs have known about this for a while, I think the clubs have acted wisely.

Of course, everyone wants to win, but this season it's about surviving and for some not going out.

Have you had any comments on how the clubs should act?

- No, and that is not the league's task and we do not have such a mandate either.

Our clubs own the SHL so they decide over us.

We can not give any directives and they act as they please.

We now have 14 clubs that are very balanced and well maintained.

In addition, we have a good cooperation between the clubs when it comes to such exceptional situations.
