Wesley Koolhof

and

Nikola Mektic have

only been playing together since the beginning of the year, but in this short period they have had time to become one of the great revelations of the US Open.

The Dutchman and the Croatian will play the doubles final today against

Mate Pavic

and

Bruno Soares

at an Arthur Ashe Stadium where Koolhof's peculiar clothing will shine with its own light.

A black t-shirt with neon tones that has not left anyone indifferent.

"Either you like it or you hate it," admits the Dutchman, hours before the most important game of his life.

The colorful design of his shirt corresponds to the German firm Bidi Badu, who chose a most suggestive slogan:

Heat Up The Night

.

"It's kind of graffiti. They were inspired by the night sessions on this track, with so many bright lights and all that," says Koolhof.

The unexpected prominence doesn't seem to affect the 31-year-old veteran, whose best previous Grand Slam result was last year's Wimbledon quarter-finals, paired with

Marcus Daniell

.

Rather, he seems delighted with the attraction to which he himself submits with his clothing.

"Bright colors always work well," he explains in an interview with the ATP.

"I don't know if he was joking"

In fact, this same year the firm Nike has also launched for Flushing Meadows a commemorative edition of that revolutionary

Andre Agassi

kit

in 1990. Koolhof, a true devotee of the eight-major champion, seems the ideal player to continue with this particular legacy.

"Agassi was my idol. I liked his style of play and his remains. He was the only tennis player I really followed when I was very young," admits Wesley, who last season played three Masters 1000 finals and in December won the title of Doha forming a duo with the 40-year-old

Rohan Bopanna

.

Pavic and Soares, who lost

Jean-Julien Rojer

and

Horia Tecau

in the semifinals

, start today as favorites, although Koolhof will remain faithful to his aggressive style on the track.

"My partner says he never saw anything better. I don't know if he was joking, but what I have clear is that if we win the title for me it will be the best shirt ever designed."
