Sweden actually had a chance to take the lead already after two minutes when Emil Krafth's post found Marcus Berg's head.

The nod went just outside Anthony Lope's post.

After that, Portugal had more good goal chances, but Robin Olsen saved, among other things, Cristiano Ronaldo's attempt to break the Swedish zero.

Sweden was pretty good in the match at the National Arena, but then came the nightmare minute just before the break.

Second player to reach 100 goals

Midfielder Gustav Svensson picked up his second yellow card when he was late with a tackle on Joao Moutinho.

The ensuing free kick pulled Ronaldo nicely behind Olsen and it was the Portuguese star's 100th goal in the national team jersey.

He will be the second player in history to reach 100 national team goals.

Iranian Ali Daei has the most with 109.

Svensson's red card is the first in the national team since Andreas Granqvist was sent off against Moldova in March 2015.

Two straight losses

With one man less, Sweden did not have much to go on the offensive path and a quarter into the second half, Bruno Fernande's hit the crossbar.

But it was not the Manchester United player who extended Portugal's lead, it was Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese got the ball just outside the penalty area and lifted it over Olsen in an extremely elegant way.

The goal was the superstar's seventh in four matches against Sweden.

At the end of the match, Portugal was close to making it 3-0, but Joao Felix did not reach the ball.

Sweden has started its group in the a-division in the Nations League with two straight losses, without scoring a goal.

Four matches remain - two against Croatia, another against France and another against Portugal.

The team that finishes last in the group goes down to the b-division.
