Naomi Osaka has reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the third time in her career at the US Open on the night from Sunday to Monday (Dutch time).

Petra Kvitová surprisingly did not make it to the last eight and Alexander Zverev did reach the quarterfinals among the men.

The fourth seeded Osaka got rid of Anett Kontaveit from Estonia in two sets: 6-3 and 6-4.

In the quarter-finals, a meeting with Shelby Rogers awaits, who was too strong for Kvitová.

Although Osaka has been in the top for a few years, she is only in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the third time.

At the earlier two times, the US Open in 2018 and the Australian Open in 2019, that led directly to the overall victory.

Her upcoming opponent Rogers, the number 93 in the world, won 7-6 (5), 3-6 and 7-6 (6) against two-time Grand Slam winner Kvitová, who missed no less than four match points in the deciding set.

Rogers did strike at her first chance.

Kvitová twice won Wimbledon, but never got further than the quarterfinals in New York.

Last year, the global number twelve already stranded in the second round.

Earlier in the evening, the curtain also fell for Angelique Kerber, who lost in two sets to the American Jennifer Brady: 6-1 and 6-4.

The 32-year-old German won the US Open in 2016, but never got further than the third round.

Zverev for the first time to quarterfinals

In the men, Zverev needed an hour and a half to beat 21-year-old Alejandro Davidovich Fokina: 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1.

The number five on the placement list did not take a single break against the Spanish talent, who requested a medical time-out at the start of the third set.

It is the first time this US Open that Zverev has won a match without a set loss.

In the first three rounds against Kevin Anderson, Brandon Nakashima and Adrian Mannarino, he won 'only' after a four-setter.

In the quarterfinals, 23-year-old Zverev awaits a showdown with the Croat Borna Coric (ATP-32), who was too strong for the Australian Jordan Thompson with 7-5, 6-1 and 6-3 Jordan Thompson.

Zverev, an outsider for the US Open title, has never reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament in his career.

At Flushing Meadows, he never got further than the eighth finals (2019) until this year.

David Goffin, the number seven on the placement list, did not make it against the twelfth ranked Denis Shapovalov.

It became 6-7 (0), 6-3, 6-4 and 6-3 for the Canadian.

Shapovalov now faces Pablo Carreño Busta, who is through after Novak Djokovic was disqualified for hitting the ball against a linesman.
