It was a messy Formula 1 race on the classic Monzabanan in Italy.

Lewis Hamilton was on his way to his 90th victory when he drove into the depot without noticing that it flashed red on the posts at the bank edge.

The depot was closed to drivers after an incident on the track and for that violation Hamilton was punished with a time penalty that made it impossible for him to win the race.

The Briton eventually finished in seventh place.

When Hamilton disappeared from the game and teammate Valtteri Bottas had a bad day, it was time for a bang.

Hard duel

Pierre Gasly fought a tough duel against the Spaniard Carlos Sainz for the victory, but the McLaren driver could not drive again and finished 41 hundredths behind the Frenchman.

- Honestly, it is absolutely incredible.

I do not think I understand what is happening now.

It was such a crazy race, says the Alpha Tauri driver in the victory interview after the race.

Revenge

For Gasly, the victory is a sensational revenge after last year when he was poked from the Red Bull stable in the middle of the season.

The 24-year-old now became the first Frenchman to win a Formula 1 race since 1996.

- I have been with so much during the last 18 months.

Imagine being able to win your first Formula 1 race at Monza, says Gasly.

- I have a hard time grasping this, he continues.

Ferrari's bitter weekend at home Monza continued on Sunday.

Sebastian Vettel had to break after the brakes stopped working and Charles Leclerc crashed so violently in the protective barrier that the race had to be stopped and restarted only half an hour later.

Leclerc survived unscathed.

Through the Alpha Tauri stable, it was still an Italian victory on the Monzabanan.
