The fact that Lyons' men reached the semi-finals of the Champions League this week was a great bang. That Lyons ladies play the final in the same tournament on Sunday, however, is nothing to raise an eyebrow at.

What is remarkable, then, is the team's enormous dominance in Europe over the past decade.

The star-studded French team, with world players such as Ada Hegerberg, Dzsenifer Marozsán, Saki Kumagai, Lucy Bronze and Wendie Renard - just to name a few - has won the tournament for the past four years and has six titles in the last ten years.

Several loss-free years

Lyon have won the domestic league 14 years in a row and have not lost a competitive match since 2018. In the European Games, the latest loss came in 2017.

Maybe in time for someone to make a movie about the team? At the beginning of next month, it will have its cinema premiere.

In "Les Joueuses" (The Players), director Stéphanie Gillard follows the French big team, on and off the pitch, during the final stages of the 2018-19 season, which ended with a triple (league, cup, Champions League).

The film's subtitle “Pas Là Pour Danser” (not here to dance) is an answer to the question that Ada Hegerberg received in December 2018, when she became the first woman to receive the Ballon d'Or, the world's most prestigious award for a football player. On stage, the French disc jockey Martin Solveig asked if the Norwegian could "twerk", to which Hegerberg gave a quick "no" in response.

More important than money

That kind of less respectful treatment is still part of everyday life for the world's best football player on the women's side, something that can already be seen in the trailer for the film. In one scene, a shop assistant in a sports shop asks what level the Lyon players are at.

- Are you already a professional ?, he asks in surprise when he finds out the answer.

Welshwoman Jess Fishlock, who played in Lyon when the film was made, also says in the trailer that it is above all not about money but about being taken seriously.

- Not being treated with respect and not being treated like a professional is much worse than Ada earning less than Messi and Ronaldo, Fishlock says.

"Les Joueuses" premieres on September 9.

The Champions League final between Lyon and Wolfsburg will be played at 8 pm on Sunday.
