Manchester United international defender Harry Maguire said Thursday that he "feared" for his life and that he thought he was being kidnapped when he was arrested a week ago while on vacation on a Greek island.

Maguire told BBC Sport that several plainclothes policemen who, he said, did not identify themselves, stopped his group's minibus, took it out and beat it. "At the moment I thought they were kidnapping us. We had to get on our knees and raise our hands, they began to beat us, " he explained in his first interview after the altercation.

"They hit me on the legs, telling me that my career was over: 'no more football, you will never play again '", he continued excitedly.

"They beat me a lot on the legs. I panicked. I was scared . I was scared for my life, " he explained, denying that he had thrown punches or tried to bribe the police.

The 27-year-old United captain was sentenced to 21 months and 10 days in probation after being convicted of bodily injury, attempted corruption, violence against officials, and insults following his arrest in Mykonos.

"I don't wish it on anyone. Obviously, the situation made the task difficult for one of the biggest clubs in the world, so I'm sorry I made the fans and the club suffer, but I didn't do anything wrong, " he added.

On vacation in Mykonos, the most expensive defender in the world - United signed him a year ago for 87 million euros (about 103 million dollars) - was arrested last Thursday night with his brother and a friend after a fight with other tourists, followed by an altercation with Greek police and citizens. The player appealed the sentence and there will be a new trial before a higher court.
