• Jakobsen "I became afraid of not surviving"

The director of the Deceuninck-Quick Step, Patrick Lefevere , has said that the Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen "has been given 130 points in the face and has one tooth left" after the accident he suffered on 5 August in the first stage of the Return to Poland.

Lefevere explained that the wound that the runner suffered in the neck is already completely closed, but "he has a paralyzed vocal cord" and "his palate must heal," he told VTM television on Wednesday.

"The boy looks terrible and is in shock. We hope he makes a full recovery, but it will be a process that will take months," he added.

Jakobsen had to undergo a five-hour operation after the accident and spent a week in a Polish Incentive Care Unit. He was later transferred to the University of Leiden Medical Center in the Netherlands, and is currently at his home in the Dutch town of Heukelum.

On the other hand, Lefevere gave better news about the Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel, who broke his pelvis on August 15 when he fell from a ravine in a race in Lombardy. As he explained, his situation is less serious and that "if he does well, he will heal in the next six weeks."

The director of Deceuninck-Quick Step acknowledged that both accidents have been a wake-up call to the cycling world. "We woke up, I could have had two funerals in ten days, " he said with resignation.
