46-ranked Peterson has chased a better ranking to reach seeding in Grand Slam tournaments. Now she has reached that milestone after the corona pandemic cleared hard in the starting field. Only two of the world's eight best players will start in the women's class.
The Swede's draw is favorable. In the event of a possible win against Flipkens, 79th in the rankings, one of the unseeded players awaits 48-ranked Marie Bouzkova, Czech Republic, or 83-ranked Jessica Pegula, USA, in the second round.
Third-ranked Karolina Pliskova is top-seeded in the tournament in New York.
In the men's class, Mikael Ymer, ranked 69th, gets tough opposition in his initial match and meets the 26-seeded Serb Filip Krajinovic.
They are the only Swedes who are currently ready for the singles class in the tournament that starts on 31 August.
