The young Belgian prodigy Remco Evenepoel, victim of a fractured pelvis after a heavy fall on August 15 on the Tour of Lombardy, will be able to leave the hospital on Monday, his family announced. “I'm coming home,” read the runner's Facebook page, above a photo from June showing him with his girlfriend and parents. Reached by AFP, his father Patrick Evenepoel said that the return home in Dilbeek, west of Brussels, was scheduled "this evening", that is to say Monday at the end of the day.

Remco Evenepoel, 20, who was the favorite of the event, crashed heavily during the Tour of Lombardy. About forty kilometers from the finish, on the descent of the Mur de Sormano, he fell into a ravine after hitting a stone wall. Several pelvic bone fractures and a contusion to the right lung were diagnosed. After two days spent at the hospital in Como, Evenepoel was repatriated to Belgium last Monday and admitted to hospital in Herentals, in the province of Antwerp (north).

Now opens for him a long period of rest and rehabilitation before being able to get back on a bike. A priori, he will need “six weeks of absolute rest. Rest flat on the bed. Add to that a few weeks before he gets back on the bike, ”said Yvan Vanmol, doctor of his team, Deceuninck-Quick Step last week. Remco Evenepoel won four stage races in 2020 including the Tour of Poland, marked by another very spectacular crash, that of Fabio Jakobsen.
