Dale Hawerchuk was a big NHL star in the 1980s, most notably as team captain for Winnipeg, Canada, where he has his shirt hoisted to the ceiling.

Hawerchuk was diagnosed in September last year with stomach cancer, from which he died in the suites. It was Dale's son, Eric, who announced his father's death via social media.

"My family is proud of him and how he fought."

Calgary's Rasmus Andersson, who coached Hawerchuk in the Barrie Colts junior team, mourns his former coach and NHL legend.

“Peace and quiet Dale. It was an honor to play for you ", he writes on social media.

In addition to Winnipeg, Dale Hawerchuk also represented Buffalo, St. Louis. Louis and Philadelphia. In total, Hawerchuk made 1188 NHL appearances and 1,409 points.
