• Speed: the DGT tests a radar that fines a kilometer away
  • Balance. In 2019 1,755 people died in accidents, 3% less
  • Report: Roads need 7.5 billion in maintenance

The return to normalcy after the exit from the state of alarm has made one thing clear: that if traffic accidents decreased dramatically during confinement, it was exclusively because we could not go out on the road with our vehicles. They had already been warning different sources, the accident data confirms it and it is logical to see the images of the savages that the DGT captures daily.

Regarding the first, it is enough to point out that, despite the decrease in the number of trips (10.7% less in the first week of August, for example), the number of deaths in accidents is almost on par if we take as reference the data posted since June 21. That is, when the state of alarm ended and free movement throughout the country was allowed again. Since that date and until last Thursday, August 13, 173 deaths have been registered , just five less than in the same period of 2019.

Some of the reasons for this result are quickly deduced by looking at the collection of traffic violations detected in recent weeks. These include cases of harassment of vehicles that circulate in front, pitfalls between cars, overtaking in crosswalks , not respecting the safety distance with cyclists, even writing messages on the mobile by taking both hands off the wheel ...

As is well known, the technical means available to the DGT this summer are more numerous than ever: 1,324 speed control points between fixed, mobile and section radars; 216 cell phone and mobile surveillance cameras; 11 drones (three of them with reporting capacity), 12 helicopters and 15 camouflaged vans. In addition, he has been testing a new radar capable of fines from a kilometer away for some time.
