Belgian prodigy Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck) is suffering from a fractured pelvis and lung contusion following his impressive fall during the Tour of Lombardy, his team announced on Saturday. The 20-year-old runner, who has fallen over a parapet, "will be unavailable until further notice," Deceuninck added in a statement. This greatly compromises his end of the season, especially his participation in the Giro d'Italia (October 3-25), which should have been his first Grand Tour.

Remco Evenepoel has been one of the great leaders of the season, winning all four stage races in which he has competed, including the Tour of Poland last week with amazing ease. He was one of the big favorites of the Tour of Lombardy and was in the top group when he fell.

About forty kilometers from the finish, in a downhill bend, the Belgian hit the parapet of a bridge and fell into the void, ending his race several meters below. Quickly taken care of by doctors, he was taken to Sant'Anna Hospital in Como where he carried out examinations.

And it was finally the Dane Jakob Fuglsang who won the event on Saturday, the second great classic of his career, after Liège-Bastogne-Liège last year. “It was hot and it rolled very quickly. I was lucky to have Vlasov who helped me a lot. After the Civiglio, I thought it would be a sprint with George. But on San Fermo I tried. And when I saw that I was alone, I continued to press, up to the line, ”said the 35-year-old cyclist.
