  • The Girondins de Bordeaux will separate from Paulo Sousa with whom they have found a financial agreement.
  • Only two weeks before the resumption of Ligue 1, the Portuguese coach should be replaced by Jean-Louis Gasset, already spent by the club between 2007 and 2010 as an assistant to Laurent Blanc.
  • The former coach of the Greens could lead his first training on Monday during the Saint-Paul-lès-Dax training course.

He will therefore not get on the bus on Monday. Paulo Sousa will not take the direction of Saint-Paul-lès-Dax in the Landes where the second training camp of the Girondins de Bordeaux is to be held this week, 15 days before the start of Ligue 1 against Nantes at Matmut Atlantique. After many twists and turns, the Portuguese coach and the club found an amicable agreement this Sunday to separate according to information from 20 Minutes. “It's 99% done. There are only a few details to be finalized, ”explains a person close to the file.

The two sides resumed talks on Saturday in an attempt to find financial common ground after many weeks of playing cat and mouse. As a reminder, Paulo Sousa had warned his management as soon as training resumed on June 22 that he wanted to leave the club. He then announced it to his own players on July 1. But when the club came back to him on July 10 to let him know he could leave (for free), the former midfielder had changed his mind. Why ?

King Street has taken over

No one will ever really know. The club explains that it did not want to leave without a check or that it had not found a way out. The Portuguese's entourage claims that the club refused to release him at first and then would have asked him for compensation. It was out of the question for Paulo Sousa. Since his real-false start at the end of July, he had returned to work with the support of his players, like the great victory obtained on Saturday in Reims in a friendly (4-0). Despite the very complicated context with his management, his relatives were also doing everything so that he continued at least the Bordeaux adventure for another year.

⚽️After a week without contact, negotiations between the @girondins and @paulomcdsousa about a departure from the Portuguese resumed this Saturday. File managed by Daniel Ehrmann (King Street).

But, the club had decided otherwise. King Street precisely. For the first time since the club's buyout in November 2018 and then that of GACP's shares in December 2019, the American investment fund, the exclusive owner of the club, has taken things in hand in the sportsman. After the dismissal of Eduardo Macia (Director of Football), Daniel Ehrmann managed the Sousa case. Frédéric Longuépée, the disputed CEO of the Girondins, being excluded from the discussions. The Girondins' file manager for King Street preferred to pay severance pay to the Portuguese rather than having to continue to support his very large salary (280,000 euros per month, third biggest salary in Ligue 1) and his repeated criticisms of the club management. All this in a context of budget cuts in Haillan.

Gasset expected this Monday for the internship

Despite the departure of the former Juve and Dortmund player, the coach's place in the Girondins bus should be occupied this Monday at the time of departure. It is also a familiar of this bus which should be there. A certain Jean-Louis Gasset. Laurent Blanc's deputy, especially in Bordeaux (2007-2010), is expected at Haillan to succeed Paulo Sousa. A little over a year after his departure from AS Saint-Etienne, he should even lead his first session at the end of the afternoon on Monday in the Landes according to our information. It's a real race against the clock that awaits him two weeks before the restart.

We will also have to observe the reaction of the players in the coming days. Ballot for months in a club in perpetual crisis, they continued to work serenely for the last few weeks despite everything and most had given their support to Paulo Sousa. If his CV and his reputation speak for him, Jean-Louis Gasset will have to deal with this context at the start. He also surely has his ideas. In short, the workforce could quickly move. According to information from 20 Minutes, some Stéphanois dismissed by Claude Puel have already informed Gasset that they would like to join him in Gironde. This is the case with Yann M'Vila. Problem, his salary is totally out of reach for Bordeaux.

In the meantime, the Girondins players will all be tested again this Monday morning after the appearance this weekend of cases of Covid-19 within the Toulouse workforce (Bordeaux opponent last Tuesday). They could be retested on Thursday before the last friendly match against Auxerre, scheduled for Saturday (6 p.m.). For now, no Bordeaux player has tested positive since the start of the preparation apart from Samuel Kalu when he returned from Africa in early July. Since then, the Nigerian has undergone a fortnight before resuming collective training last week.
