It was a dramatic end to the PGA Championship in San Francisco.

Before the day, ten players were within three strokes of the lead and with just over half of the last round played, for a short time as many as six players were at the top.

Then the least experienced of them struck. First by lowering a birdie chip on the 14th hole, which gave him the lead.

But it was the 16th hole, a par 4, that took Collin Morikawa to the history books. After a perfect drive, he could see how the ball stopped on the green, just over two meters from the hole. A putt later, the ball was in the cup and the young American suddenly led by two strokes.

- My caddy JJ (Jakovac) asked what I wanted to do. I hesitated between an iron blow and going for it. Why not just take the driver? And it turned out to be a good hit. It needed to get a good bounce, and it got it and such blows must be used, says Morikawa at the press conference after the win.

Got a taste for winning

The 23-year-old from Los Angeles kept the lead, despite all the chasing stars. When Dustin Johnson only got par on the 17th and had to make a hole-in-one on the over 400 meter long 18th to get in the race, it was all over.

- I'm in seventh heaven. It is difficult to grasp how much this victory means. It's a major competition and it's them all who want to win, especially at the end of their careers, and here I am, at the beginning of mine, he says.

- I've got a taste for this now.

His bogey-free final round, with four birdies and one eagle, was the best of all on Sunday, giving a total of 13 strokes under par - two strokes ahead of Englishman Paul Casey and three ahead of stars such as Jason Day, Bryson DeChambeau and Tony Finau.

"A special place"

- I knew that a very, very good round would be needed today, says Morikawa, who until last spring studied at the University of Berkeley at San Francisco Bay.

San Francisco is therefore like his second home, he says.

- I have not been back here since I graduated. But it's a special place for me. To win here on a course that I have played on dozens of times during my studies, it feels special.

He won only his second major ever tournament and joins the trio of Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, who according to The Guardian are the last three players to win the PGA Championship at the age of 23. And the opponents are impressed - like runner-up Paul Casey:

- I played phenomenally well today and there is nothing I would have liked to have changed. Collin really deserves this, especially after the result on the 16th, it's just a matter of lifting the hat, he says.

Norén finished well

A little further down the field, Alex Norén also finished well when he went around on 67 strokes, three under par, on his fourth round. Two birdies on the final three holes ensured that the Swede climbed the results list.

The 38-year-old, who got a reserve place for the major, thus finished in a shared 22nd place, a total of four under par, and became the best Swede.

After Henrik Stenson and Marcus Kinhult missed the qualifying limit, Norén was the only blue-yellow player left, but a failed third round, 73 strokes and three over par, meant that he too was counted in the battle for victory before Sunday's final round at TPC Harding Park.
