Thirteenth place at Silverstone was too disappointing for Carlos Sainz, who did not miss the opportunity to reiterate his message for anyone who wanted to hear it at McLaren. "At the moment there is no way for this to change direction. Another race where points are thrown away," stressed the Spanish driver, victim of another error by his mechanics.

The stop on lap 23 at the 70th Anniversary GP brought Sainz back to recent bad memories. A month ago, problems with changing the left rear wheel caused him to lose fifth place in the Styrian GP. More recently, another coordination failure to free him on pit road thwarted his options at the Hungarian GP.

"We could have scored relatively easy points if it had gone well with the stops, but things have not worked out," summed up Sainz, eleventh now in the World Cup, with only 15 points, one less than Esteban Ocon. The Renault driver also crossed the road at Silverstone, much to his misery. "He was behind me and finished eighth," Carlos recalled at the Movistar F1 microphones.

Two points for Norris

The good start was of no use this time either, with a solid first relief that took him up to fourth place, just behind Valtteri Bottas, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. "The mistake threw out all the previous work. We could have fought for quite a few points with our strategy and with our race management, but again in the key parts it seems that we did not get it right," said the future Ferrari driver.

The difficulties for McLaren were also reflected in Lando Norris, who had to beat Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly to grab the two points of ninth place. The second unscored race is the worst streak for Sainz since last September, when he linked three consecutive races (Belgium, Italy and Singapore).

It could be even worse on Sunday for the Spaniard, who had to get rid of Sebastian Vettel after a spin from the German in the first lap. After the first five of the World Cup, the four-time world champion has only 10 points, 35 less than Charles Leclerc , his partner in the Scuderia . This is the worst record for Vettel since the 2008 World Cup, when he was still a rookie at Toro Rosso.
