Christian Horner is lyrical about the team performance of Red Bull Racing after the unexpected victory of Max Verstappen at Silverstone. The team boss was pleasantly surprised after the first victory of 2020.

"We beat Mercedes on all fronts. We were better in both speed and strategy today," Horner told Sky Sports .

Just like Verstappen himself, his team boss was also surprised by the first victory of the season. "The race pace was much better than we expected. It was only when we took the lead that I first had the feeling that we could win."

The victory was due to Red Bull's different strategy. Verstappen started on hard tires, while Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas started the race on medium. The Limburger was able to drive on for much longer and regained the lead shortly after his first pit stop.

"We were quite surprised that we were the only ones to choose this strategy in qualifying on Saturday," said Horner. "And during the race we changed tactics by letting Max do his second short stint on medium."

Horner: 'The team is on the right track'

After his second pit stop, Verstappen again drove to victory on the hard tire. Alexander Albon gave the team an extra boost with a creditable fifth place.

"Today is an incredibly beautiful day for the team. There is still a lot to learn for us, but this weekend shows that we are on the right track."
