Renault's complaint accusing Racing Point of having copied Mercedes was accepted by the International Automobile Federation on Friday. Racing Point will therefore lose points in the constructors' world championship.

The Formula 1 team Racing Point will lose points in the constructors' world championship, the complaint of its rival Renault accusing it of having copied Mercedes for certain elements of its single-seater having been accepted, announced Friday the International Federation of automotive (FIA). Racing Point will lose 7.5 points per car entered in the championship, or 15 points in total, the same source said. Suddenly, Renault took fifth place in the provisional standings of the constructors' world championship with 32 points, against 27 at Racing Point, which went sixth.

200,000 euros fine

Racing Point, owned by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll and whose cars are powered by Mercedes engines, will also have to pay a fine of 200,000 euros per car concerned. Renault believed that Racing Point had copied for its car this year some parts, including the brake scoops, from the victorious Mercedes last year. Racing Point has the option of appealing this decision.

Renault had lodged three complaints in total, after the Grand Prix of Styria, Hungary and Great Britain for each time the same reasons and the decision of the FIA ​​applies in the same way to these three complaints.

Drivers will not be penalized

Racing Point drivers, Mexican Sergio Perez and Canadian Lance Stroll, Lawrence's son, were not penalized, however.

Sergio Perez, who tested positive for the coronavirus, was replaced for the British Grand Prix last week and will be replaced for the 70 years of F1 this weekend by the German Nico Hülkenberg.
