The first stage of the Tour of Poland was marred on Wednesday by a bizarre crash. Dylan Groenewegen was the fastest in the bunch sprint, but came across the line after a crash with Fabio Jakobsen. The Dutch champion flew full in the crush barriers.

The 27-year-old Groenewegen lost his victory not much later, because the Dutchman deviated from his line in the sprint and thereby hindered Jakobsen, who crashed hard and crashed into the photographer through the crush barriers.

Groenewegen also fell, but was the first to cross the line. Marc Sarreau finished second behind Groenewegen. The Frenchman also fell, but is conscious according to his team Groupama-FDJ. Sarreau is on his way to the hospital to take pictures.

According to the Tour of Poland organization, Jakobsen has now won the first stage. Deceuninck-Quick-Step, the team of Jakobsen, says that the Dutchman is currently being treated by doctors. It is not yet known how Groenewegen is doing.

Stage starts with minute of silence

The first stage of over 195 kilometers with start in Chorzów and finish in Katowice started with a minute of silence for Bjorg Lambrecht. The Belgian died last year in the third stage of the Polish stage race after a terrible crash.

The stage was long colored by another Dutchman. Julius van den Berg of EF Education First was the breakaway of the day with Brit Sam Brand and Poles Kamil Malecki and Maciej Paterski. The 23-year-old rider from Purmerend stayed ahead with his fellow refugees, but was caught by the peloton 16 kilometers from the finish.

In the final phase, the pace was kept high by the men of Team INEOS for a long time to keep leader Richard Carapaz out of trouble. Some riders went down, but that did not cause great damage to big names.

In the final kilometers the sprinters came forward and Groenewegen seemed to be on his way to his first victory since the corona crisis, at the expense of Jakobsen, but the organization took that away from him by the crash with Jakobsen.
