Carolina will be the first team to advance from the playoffs to the quarterfinals of this year's specially designed Stanley Cup playoffs. Three straight victories, in a match series in the best of five, against the New York Rangers (3–2,4–1, 4–1) paved the way.

Henrik Lundqvist got the chance in the first two matches. But whipped to win to have a chance to advance in the playoffs, it was again the current first goalkeeper Igor Sjestjorkin who entered the ice when the third match started.

Carolina turned the event around

But after a lead goal for Rangers in the second period, it was once again Carolina who scored the goals.

It may have been the last match in Rangers for Lundqvist. Although he has one year left on his contract, this past winter - where the 38-year-old was for a period the third choice - has started speculation that he may be bought out.

Long suite broken

The match also marked the end of Lundqvist's breathtaking streak of 129 playoff games in Rangers' goal. According to nhl.com, the Swede's playoff suite is the third longest in NHL history for a goalkeeper who has played for one and the same team. The suite dates back to April 26, 2006, when Lundqvist started for Rangers against New Jersey in the quarterfinal series.

In the second game tonight where the playoff teams met for the third time, Calgary took the lead against Winnipeg 2-1, after a 6-2 victory.
