Egan Bernal won the leader's jersey in the Route d'Occitanie on Monday by winning the tough third stage. Bauke Mollema finished fifth in the queen stage. Gorka Izagirre was the strongest in the Italian one-day race Gran Trittico Lombardo.

Bernal crossed the finish line solo at the Col de Beyrède. His teammate at Team INEOS Pavel Sivakov finished second in ten seconds. With Aleksander Vlasov (third at seventeen seconds) there was still a young Russian climber on the day stage.

Thibaut Pinot finished fourth in 31 seconds, while Mollema was number five in 1 minute and 5 seconds. The only 23-year-old Dutchman Kevin Inkelaar, who is in his first season with a World Tour team at Bahrain McLaren, finished well in twelfth in just two minutes.

Chris Froome, who is in his second race in the French stage race since he was seriously injured in the Critérium du Dauphiné last year, was 34th just over five minutes behind his teammate Bernal.

After two stages for the sprinters, a tough mountain stage through the Pyrenees was on the program on Monday. In the second part of the 163.5 kilometer long stage, the riders had to ride over three cols of the first category, with the finish on top of the Col de Beyrède (10.9 kilometers at 7.2 percent).

Tour winner Bernal took over the leader's jersey from French sprinter Bryan Coquard, who, as expected, was unable to join the climbers. The Route d'Occitanie ends on Tuesday with a hilly ride.

Izagirre wins in Italian storm

In Italy, in the pouring rain, Gorka Izagirre took the win in Gran Trittico Lombardo, a match in which semi-classics Tre Valli Varesine, Coppa Bernocchi and Coppa Agostoni were joined together.

Spanish Astana rider Izagirre crossed the line in Varese after just under 200 kilometers solo. His country and teammate Alex Aranburu finished second by beating the toppers Greg Van Avermaet (third), Michal Kwiatkowski (fourth) and Vincenzo Nibali (fifth) in a sprint from the chasing group.
