Sales of passenger cars and SUVs in Spain rose 1.1% in July with a total volume of 118,000 units, exceeding the 116,686 deliveries made in the same month of 2019. So far this year , 458,168 units have been registered , which which represents a decrease of 43.4% , according to AutoInfor data.

The data is very positive when you consider that we came out of a historic market close due to the pandemic that drastically affected sales during the last quarter. The worst month was April with sales of 4,163 cars and a drop of 96.5% . May , the month in which we left the confinement, closed with 34,337 sales and a decrease of 72.7% compared to the same month of 2019. Finally, in June 82,651 passenger cars were registered , 36.7% less than a year before.

The sector points to two keys to this good sales figure last month. On the one hand, deliveries of orders made before the pandemic have been made, but new contracts have been generated, which were accelerated in the second half of the month after the Government announced the Moves II plan and the Renewal Program of public aid to the purchase of a new vehicle. In addition, the Renove is retroactive for all passenger cars that have been registered in 2020, the so-called km0.

Private individuals rise

Hence, individuals increased their sales by 6.2% in July to 62,400 units, being the engine of the market, given that companies grew 0.7% to 39,949 units. The channel with the worst results is that of rental companies, which fell 14.4% to 15,633 deliveries, given the uncertainty that exists regarding the arrival of foreign tourists to Spain due to the outbreaks.

However, aid from these plans is expected to reach the buyer's pocket in the last quarter of the year, given that they are processed by the autonomous communities and none of them has published their regulations.

With the July data, the associations of the Anfac sector (manufacturers), Faconauto (dealers) and Ganvam (sellers) maintain their forecast that the market would fall in the total for the year by 25% with between 825,000 and 850,000 units . At the expense of there being no closure of activity in the main markets of the country (Madrid and Barcelona) in the event of multiple outbreaks. In Madrid they have sold 180,300 cars, 39% of the total market.

If we take into account the propulsion system, in July 1,528 pure electric vehicles were sold , which represents an increase of 69% compared to the same month of 2019. The best thing is that this data increases the accumulated in the year to 6,789 sales; reducing the annual fall to 18.7%.

100% electric passenger cars account for 1.5% of sales in the year. On the other hand, 36,094 diesel cars were sold in July , which represents a rise of 2.8% compared to July 2019. Diesel sales fell 41% in the year, less than the market total.

Volkswagen and the Clio, leaders

The leading brand was Volkswagen with 9,614 cars ahead of Peugeot that delivered 9,146 vehicles and Seat that achieved 8,872 sales. So far this year, the Spanish brand leads the market with 39,304 units ahead of its parent company, Volkswagen , which adds 36,561 and Peugeot's which accumulates 35,874 deliveries.

By models, the irruption of the new Renault Clio stands out, which was the best-selling in July with 2,856 units, closely followed by the 2,840 Sandero delivered by Dacia . Third was the 2008 Peugeot made in Vigo with 2,551 sales. So far this year, the star model is the Seat León with 12,199 cars, followed by the Dacia Sandero with 11,512 units and the Renault Cllio , which accumulates 10,746 deliveries.
